A client wanted to turn an existing bedroom into a space that could serve multiple purposes. While she still hoped to use the room as a guest bedroom to welcome friends and family, she also wanted a space of her own to read, meditate, draw, or just be.
We talked extensively with the client to better understand exactly how she wanted to use the room and how she wanted it to feel—the layout of the room and the choice of materials and finishes had to match her vision.
We designed and built custom built-in cabinetry to showcase the client’s reading library while making the best use of the space. This custom unit was created in a #2 pine to mimic a bookcase in the client’s previous home, providing a rustic, textured element, and was finished with rosewood stain and polyurethane. The corner bookshelves provide 8′ on each of the seven shelves. Using the same species of wood yet different grades, we achieved a color match and incorporated the elements of both new and old-world cabinetry.
Complementing the bookshelves in the same stain and finish, a large double armoire was built across the room. This showstopping piece opens to reveal a custom queen size murphy bed with flanking base cabinets and shelf units. Hidden upper storage and a full shelf unit headboard complete with an outlet provide places for guests to place their belongings, charge their devices, and feel right at home. But when guests leave, the client closes the bed and has more room to relax and enjoy her space.
We are also designing a custom drafting desk using elements from about three different desks and tables. Selecting what works the best for the client is of utmost importance. By taking the time to understand the client’s needs and preferences, we have evolved a standard bedroom into a highly functional and calming retreat.
