A client’s bathroom needed substantial renovation. The original layout did not provide much space and was outdated. However, it was the only full bathroom in the home, so it was easy to understand why this project had been put off for some time.
The client, a skilled craftsman, was up to the challenge of doing the work but required our assistance with design and planning. Ultimately, the client decided to renovate the space in terms of layout, fixtures, and finishings. We helped the client by designing a new modern layout to provide ample space to the 4’8″x13’5″ galley style bath, functioning and styled storage, and a more pleasing shower experience.
The vanity cabinetry was updated to a black lacquered console table, with shelf and wicker basket storage. For the sink, the client chose a round white china vessel finished with an oil-rubbed bronze single-handle waterfall spout, off set to the rear left. The flooring was replaced with 12×24 contemporary grey porcelain tile with light grey grout set in a running bond.
The new no curb walk-in design shower is wider and provides a more open feel than the previous tub/shower with curtain. It features 4×12 linen shadow ceramic wall tile set in a running bond, light grey grout, a frameless sliding shower glass door, and a stainless-steel shower tower housing a rain head, handheld, and 3 spray heads.
The client chose recessed lighting, a three-light wall sconce, and a 36×24 mirror set horizontally over the sink. An old barn beam installed along the ceiling above the existing radiator serves both as a design and functional element. It was sanded and stained with a transparent black/clear coat finish, and heat deflection was added to the bottom. A 24″ ladder shelf unit provides additional storage and décor, and hanging art, some simple baskets, and tasteful small touches complemented by an accent wall complete the room.
The client was able to complete the project with little consulting and no physical assistance from other trade professionals. The project timeline was 3 weeks from start to finish and was not a full gut. This bathroom remodel will stand the test of time and family use for years and years.
